International Literacy Association

ILA is a global advocacy organization. They publish cutting-edge research on literacy, and translate this research into practical resources for educators, students, and leaders involved in spreading literacy all across the world.

In their own words...

Our team, our Members, and our worldwide community of literacy practitioners dream, eat, and breathe literacy. Why? Because every day we see the power literacy has to change people's lives. To help them develop their knowledge and potential. To earn their livelihood. To participate fully in their community and wider society.

American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

This association is the professional group that represents teachers of all languages. The site displays information on both professional topics such as proficiency testing and employment opportunities.

Today almost all teachers teach language "literacy". Sites address teaching English as a second language or English language development or multilingual education. Few get to the heart of the matter, ie. basic literacy.
